Initial Thoughts on Born On Third Base

So far, this book is by far my favorite one that we have read.   I think that the tone of this book is extremely easy to follow and it makes it easy to go through the chapters.   I was immediately drawn into this book just because of the topic itself.   I had never heard of the term “born on third base” so it was so interesting to hear Collins talk about what that meant to him and how he is a part of this group.   I also find this book interesting because it’s not like the types of books that I find interesting (fiction), but it is so interesting because this is a topic that we are all exposed.   And it’s interesting to hear someone like Collins talk about it because usually someone like him would never really experience this issue because they’ve never been on the short side of the stick.   Although I don’t think that I could be as bighearted as him, I do think that it’s amazing what he did.   The biggest thing that shocked me abou...

What Would You Do for A Free Shirt?

Rain is beating down my face, directly into my eyes.   It’s so bad that my face is parallel to the pavement and I’m just staring at the street repeating in my head, right, left, right, left.   The wind is also pushing against us and it feels as if we all have parachutes attached to our backs that are preventing us from walking with ease.   Our feet are sore and one of us has developed a limp, even though we’re barely even halfway there.   The rain has soaked through our socks and shoes, making water ooze out with every step that we take, turning our feet into giant blisters.   I focus on an apartment building up ahead to set a goal of where we should reach before we take a break, but it seems that the building is just moving further and further away from us.   What am I doing?   I am running, wait, no walking, the Honolulu Marathon.               In my senior year, my two friends and I de...

Life on the Road 2nd Reaction

I am sad to say that after finishing the book, I am still not a huge fan.   This was a little sad because I saw all the raving reviews in the book and then I also looked into it online and saw that the reviews there were also positive.   But I did see one comment, which helped me to realize why I wasn’t able to connect with this book.   Ann Friedman from The New York Times said that because “she is a hybrid journalist-activist hybrid […] it can be hard to know which role she is holding” because she jumps from anecdote to anecdote.   I think it was because of this structure that I couldn’t really get into this book because it seemed like she was always jumping around so much.   But on one hand though I do think that this just shows how many different events and people that she met and all the experiences she had.   Also, although I didn’t like the structure, I do think that it worked well for her theme of being on the road because it did make her seem like ...
