The other
day, my friends and I were talking about how when you open a snack, it’s
usually easier to finish the whole bag than to close it. The snack that brought up this topic was Sour
Patch Kids and the reasoning was that the sugar would spill everywhere so it’s
easier to just finish the whole bag, all the sugar included. And this is all for the sake of your personal
cleanliness of course. At first I didn’t
necessarily agree because first of all, who can eat that many Sour Patch in one
sitting? And second, if this is true
then this logic would apply to everything.
My friends then clarified that this was in fact true to everything, a
bag of chips, a bowl of pasta, a bottle of wine. As they continued to discuss this, I started
to get swayed and understand their reasoning.
When you save something for later or you try to portion something off,
it is never as good it was the first day because air gets into the bag or
crumbs will spill out or something like that where the quality of your food is
degraded.
If this is
true though, would anyone actually buy the huge bags of chips from Costco or
even the family sized bags of anything at the grocery store? To me, buying a big bag of snacks is
dangerous because you fall into a pattern of grabbing the snack, putting it in
your mouth, grab, put, grab, put and so on.
And before you know it, you’re towards the end of the bag and there’s so
little it really doesn’t make sense to save it for later at that point so you
just finish it. So does anyone else have
this same problem of opening something and not being able to stop until there’s
literally nothing left to eat? And where
does this problem come from? Is it
because we don’t want to create a mess with the leftovers or is it because we
just have no self control? Either way,
is there a way to limit your snacking without downgrading to the smaller bags
of snacks?
I totally see what you mean. Personally, I'm very picky so I'm not a fan of having leftovers. That can be both a good thing and a bad thing. It's good because I always enjoy my food and savor every bite, but it's also bad because I usually stuff myself as full as I can get. Then, I leave the food behind unless it's something that can be reheated easily. When it comes to chips or candy, I usually have an easier time portioning. This is mainly because with chips I can become overwhelmed by the amount of salt, and with candy I become overwhelmed by the sugar if I have too much. Snacking is all fun and games until you finish the bag. So it's better to get a little bowl, portion the amount you want, then "chip clip" the bag and seal it in a ziplock bag to keep the food fresh. Self control is a hard thing to conquer, especially with food, so you have to portion out the food or snack before you start to chow down.
ReplyDeleteWell, first off with larger bagged snacks, you can always clip them with an office clamp to prevent too much air from entering the bad. I think putting the chips or candy in a bowl would certainly help keep track of how much of one bag you have eaten. With smaller portions, I suppose it's good to seal it off and eat it a few hours or 1-2 days later? My problem will saving food for later is that I don't want to finish it immediately, so I'll hold off from eating it. This will happen so long that by the time I am ready to eat the leftovers, too many days have passed by already.
ReplyDeleteI really like the concepts you bring up! My family trained me with the mindset that you have to finish all that is on your plate. So even if I am full I subconsciously ignore it and finish whats on my plate most of the time. The same when it comes to a bag of snacks!
ReplyDeleteI love snacks and I used to finish a whole bag by myself. But after I came here, sometimes a portion is too big and I cannot finish by myself. Also, I get tried of the flavor before I finish... I try to buy a smaller package of snack so that I can finish and do not have to leave for few days. But, the problem is that a small package costs more than a big one if I try to buy the same amount.
ReplyDeleteI am 100% guilty of doing what you talked about in the second paragraph. I used to eat chips out of the family size bags with my sandwiches for lunch, and I found that I was finishing the entire bags in 2 or 3 sittings. It took some experimenting to find a good way to not eat entire bags of chips but I think I've got it down for myself. Now, if I want to eat chips with lunch, I have to pour out a set amount of chips before I sit down and start eating. Using this plan, if I want more chips, I have to get up and grab the bag and pour out more chips and it just becomes a hassle. So my laziness beats my desire for more chips.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if snack brands do that to keep people eating. Junk food is rarely resalable, and is always geared towards convenience or size (or both). I would not be surprised if the actual packaging also is designed to make people buy and eat more.
ReplyDeleteMelanie,
ReplyDeleteSnack foods are definitely a dangerous and controversial subject!! I myself have a bag full of assorted candies in front of me. I think it is within human nature to want to finish things that we start, snacks included. I also don't like having clutter in my workspace, so this works twofold.
